It will function as a key component in an on-going collaboration between Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China teams on a comparative study of political culture and political participation in culturally Chinese societies. The survey will also include Taiwan-specific questionnaire items that capture Taiwan’s unique political configurations The next stage of research has five major points of focus. First, whether support for democracy in Taiwan has strengthened and democratic values have grown after a quarter of a century of democratic development and two peaceful transfers of power. Second, whether the insecurity and greater wealth disparity brought by globalization and regional integration has adversely affected citizens’ evaluation of government performance and support for democracy. Third, whether Confucian values are compatible with liberal democracy, and how they affect the basis for democratic legitimacy and evaluation of democratic performance. Fourth, how party identification, national identification, and differences on China policy affect political trust, evaluation of the quality of governance and overall regime performance, and ultimately the basis for democratic legitimacy. Fifth, whether the contrasting political experiences of each generation have led to obvious differences in values, for instance whether citizens that grew up under authoritarian rule have nostalgic feelings for the old regime, and whether citizens who grew up under democracy tend to be more critical of democratic performance.. The project will incorporate in its research design four major theoretical approaches -- institutional, cultural, modernization and rational choice – in the explanation of value changes and democratization. Survey results from Taiwan can be used for cross-national comparison with other emerging democracies. Changes in political values in Taiwan can also be contrasted with the experience in other culturally Chinese societies.
