Dr. Randy Schekman used a brilliantly conceived yeast genetic screen to isolated sec mutants that accumulate secretory pathway intermediates. He cloned the corresponding genes and established biochemical reactions that faithfully reproduced specific secretory pathway events. Dr. Randy Schekman was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2013. In Taiwan, there are more than forty laboratories use yeast as a research model to investigate the important biological questions and human diseases. Currently Taiwan yeast bio-resources center serves the yeast scientific community for collecting and distributing experimental yeast strains. The center also provides the exchanging experimental materials and methods for yeast research. Without the financial support from government, the yeast research community has been holding a meeting annually since 2000. Up to now, there are more than 200 scientists and students attend the meeting annually. We have a very strong yeast research community in Taiwan and several laboratories has been published many outstanding papers in international prestigious journal such as; Cell, Science, and Genes and Development, PNAS et. al.. To integrate the resources of all yeast research laboratories in Taiwan, NSC began to support the Yeast Bio-resources Center in 2011. All the members of yeast research community expressed their appreciation for support from NSC and hope the center can be a platform for exchanging all the research materials and methods, including yeast stains, gene construction tools and vectors, antibodies, genetic manipulation and cell biology techniques. We anticipate that the Yeast Bio-resources Center can promote the establishment of world class of research findings and reports from Taiwan yeast research community.Yeast Bioresource Center in Taiwan
