.<br> Abstract: According to WHO report, depression has already been the third high burden disease, and will be the worldwide No. 1 high burden disease by the year 2030. Anxiety is the highest prevalence mental disorder in Taiwan. And the population with dementia is getting larger in the aging society. Unwell mental or cognitive function will bring disability which affect not patients themselves but also the whole society, such as the medical and social burden. Mortality rate is also increased by these illnesses. Therefore, the aim of the project this year is to investigate the functional foods with mental or cognitive improvement effects. From the perspective of diet therapy, nutrition, and biochemistry, a systematic, in-depth and practical research and development in the functional foods with mental or cognitive improvement effects, such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease, will be done. Proteomics and genomics will be used for mechanism studies in the effects of functional foods on neuroscience. And clinical studies have to be done before the products are available in the market. Hopefully, this project will bring better academic performance in anti-depression, develop more products for prevention of depression, strengthen Taiwan`s health industries, improve human mental health, and train people for anti-depression research.
