Studies will be designed to examine how emotion affects the operation of self by influencing the encoding of emotion information, formation of language representation, generation of self consciousness, making decision and judgment and enacting social relationship as well as how mal-functioning in these processes may contribute to the autistic symptoms. Cognitive experiments, field studies, and humans brain imaging as well as genetic, neurobiological and behavioral manipulations applied to animal models will be used to address these issues. Subproject 1 will study recognition of emotion expressed on human face in daily life and watching drama through brain imaging, computational and behavioral approaches. Subproject 2 will investigate how Madarin represents emotion in metaphors through an embodiment perspective. Subproject 3 will design behavior and fMRI experiments to test a theory on the self concept concerning the body and mental ownership in human under normal and altered states of consciousness as well as in autistic patients. Subproject 4 will study how emotion affects choice decision in transgenic mice with altered sensitivity to reward or punishment, and also how emotion influences moral decision bearing conflict of interest between self and others and the brain circuitry subserveing this effect. Subproject 5 will study the roles of mirror- and anti-mirror typed neurons in empathy-like social interaction and social learning of avoidance responses in rats as well as the role of such neural operation in acquisition of phonetic perception via social interaction between infants and mothers in humans. Subproject 6 will study the pathology of autism ranging from genes to behavior by delineating genetic correlates of different symptoms and endophenotypes in cognitive and emotion functions; gene knock-out mice will be used to study the neurobiological basis of aberrant behavior modeling various autistic symptoms. Findings from these studies are expected to shed lights on how self is construed and operated in the brain through interaction of emotion and cognition under our specific cultural context.認知情緒自我自閉症神經機制Cognitionemotionselfautismand neural mechanism優勢重點領域拔尖計畫【總計畫-情緒認知互動與自我運作—正常人與自閉症患者之大腦機制】
