<br> Abstract: This proposal is for a two-year project of academic, book-length writing. For the past few years, I had developed a theoretical frame and collected some materials to figure out the cultural history of tourism culture in Taiwan, which gives rise to this project. On the basis of the past researches and the material accumulated, I hope to deepen the dialogue between practice and theory in the project of writing a book, with a view to breaking through the theoretical limitations. I propose an idea that “modern mass tourism” could not be seen as an isolated socio-psychological phenomenon or naturally result of prosperous society, instead, it must be explained under the “programmed structure of our everyday life” of modern capitalism. Under the theoretical guide of French Left thinkers (like Henri Lefebvre, Roger Caillois) as below, I would like to discuss the birth and growth of mass tourism in Taiwan in sociological sense. Succeeded from the previous research plan, I try to point out the difference between travel and mass tourism, and focus on the historical stages with two basic concerns: (a) the transformation of space and time structure: the development and traffic constructions, including railroad, airlines, institutionalization of vacation, the weaken of labor-value. (b) the transformation of tourist mentality: the development of the experience of moving for pleasure, the agent of package tour, the hidden organized tour particular in Taiwan. This book would be divided into 8 chapters with 150-180 thousands words (estimated).
