Le Guin’s The Telling (2000) raise issues integral to contemporary culture and society. As an apocalyptic fiction or post-apocalyptic fiction, Oryx and Crake portrays the catastrophe of resorting to biotechnology to help establish utopia. Unlike other apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fictions which focus on the end of civilization through nuclear war, plague, extraterrestrial threats, or some other disasters, Oryx and Crake pinpoints the adverse effects of biotechnology and the ambiguity of a posthuman utopia. Oryx and Crake has relevance to the immediate concerns of the New Millennium and is drastically different from Atwood’s famous dystopian work of 1985—The Handmaid’s Tale. The Telling is a Millennial fable in the sense that it is a critique of the New Leviathan—global cultural hegemony. While as a work in the Hainish Series The Telling does hark back to The Dispossessed for example, The Telling is unique in various aspects. It attempts to inquire into the role played by science and technology, investigates the implications of globalization, and is centrally concerned with the adverse or even catastrophic impact transnational corporate power and technological tycoons may have on humans. From a comparative perspective it would also be of interest to conduct a comparative study of Oryx and Crake and The Telling to see whether, in face of catastrophe, hope and resistance are still pertinent to the genre of dystopia in the new century.愛特伍德勒瑰恩反烏托邦AtwoodLe GuinDystopia新世紀烏托邦剪影──愛特伍德與勒瑰恩(II-II)
