<br> Abstract: This project breaks new grounds in the methodology of Zhuangzi research and early Chinese philosophy in general. By focusing on metaphor and structural patterns as literary forms of argument, we seek to investigate the construction of philosophical meaning in the Zhuangzi. This approach differs from traditional philology as well as from most modern philosophical reconstructions. By focusing on forms of argument, we lay the basis for an empirically informed interpretation of philosophical writings. Methodologically speaking, this project is based on the most recent developments within cognitive linguistics and the structural study of early Chinese texts. The Principal Investigators of the two research teams, Dr. De Reu and Dr. Meyer, have co-organized a conference on Literary Forms of Argumentation in Pre-Modern China at Oxford in 2009. Dr. Meyer has also actively participated in a conference on Metaphor, Structure and Meaning in Early Chinese Philosophy organized by Dr. De Reu at National Taiwan University in 2010. This project combines their research interests. The NTU research team is more focused on metaphor and the cognitive approach, while the Oxford team centers on structural and literary patterns of meaning construction. The combined expertise of these two research teams is rare and is bound to create a synergy that will lead to new insight and developments in our area of research. Through intense collaboration, we hope to publish at least one international peer-reviewed journal paper. We also firmly intend to continue our cooperation beyond this project and will seek additional funding that will allow for mutual exchange of our top graduate students as well as postdoctoral researchers.
