The Western Foothills consist of a series of subparallel thrust faults and related folds which form a west-verging fold-thrust belt. Fault-bend and fault-propagation fold structures are also common in the Western Foothills. The thrust system in northern Taiwan is now inactive with normal-faults commonly reactivating former reverse faults throughout the late Quaternary. The Western Foothills and Longitudinal Valley are a strongly active tectonic area. The most conspicuous tectonic features in those areas are north-trending thrust faults. This study will be focued on several active faults in the northern and eastern Taiwan, such as the Lichi fault, Luyeh fault, Sanyi fault, Tiehchanshan fault, Tachia fault, Chingshui fault, Liuchia fault, Hsiaokangshan fault and Chaochou fault. Recent uplift of these thrust sheets results in river incision and development of complex fluvial terraces. Several lateritic and non-lateritic terraces, for example, are preserved along the Beinandachi, Tsengwenchi and Tachia Rivers. Analysis of nearby fluvial systems provides a proxy for thrust deformation because localized long-term uplift produces anomalous changes in river systems. The purpose of this project is to discuss how fault activity can be used to show the tectonic implications. In this study, we focus on the spatial variation of slip rate and activity based on the trenching study along the activity fault. We identify the surface rupture deformation and propose possible tectonic interpretations. In addition, we will reconstruct the characteristics of the river terrace in the eastern and western Taiwan.
