The subjects are mostly from the same group of participants in the 2008~2009 NSC-supported research project. We will first examine the stability of their mastery motivation from infancy to toddlerhood. Secondly, we will use the paradigm developed in the 2009~2010 NSC-supported research project to test whether children continue their problem solving style in an achievement task when they become preschoolers at the third year of this follow-up project. This project will, in total, develop four different mother-child interaction contexts, including a problem-solving context, a joint-reading context, a free-play context, and a goal-setting challenging context. Maternal behaviors will be coded in each of the context and cross-context stability of their behavior will be investigated. Further, maternal effort beliefs, maternal emotion, and maternal childhood experience of parental support of independence will be surveyed. It is hypothesized that these implicit belief and early experience will predict maternal interactive behaviors, which, in turn, affect children’s mastery/achievement motivation.
