While the impact of climate warming on ecological patterns has been explicitly documented, we know relatively little about the ecological mechanisms through which climate warming affects organisms, populations, and community structure. In addition, we don’t know whether or how climate warming may interact with another big threat to ecosystems – species invasion. Understanding the knowledge gap will greatly improve our ability to predict the outcome of global warming in the 21st century. The goal of this study is to understand the consequences of climate warming for invasive and native species, by examining warming impact on various ecological mechanisms (e.g. warming effects on the physiology of individuals, population dynamics, intra- and inter-specific competition, or trophic interactions). In specific, I will study two competing butterfly species in Taiwan (the invasive Pieris rapae and the native P. canidia) on two of their major host plants (Rorippa indica and Brassica oleracea). Using both field survey and laboratory experiments, this study will investigate whether climate warming will affect the competition of these two butterfly species on two host plants (Year 1-2), whether the competition intensity between these two butterfly species changes with altitude, whether both butterfly species show intraspecific variation across altitude, and whether warming impact on these two butterfly species varies across altitude (Year 3-4).
