The reaction gives rise to the ruthenium carbene complex 2a in the presence of NH4PF6 in dichloromethane via an exo-dig cyclization of the ketone functionality with the triple bond. Elaboration of this process is revealed by running the reaction at high temperature or other solvents such as acetone, tetrahydrofuran or acetonitrile, yielding only ruthenium carbene complex 2a.
