Grass and legume have the potential to be one of the most important plants for application in build environment and green cities because of their characteristics of high tolerant to extreme heat, drought and low light stresses and the nitrogen fixation functions to reduce the use of fertilizer and water in build environment. Drought and cold/heat stress tolerance mechanisms are often linked biologically and globally represent major barriers for agricultural production and green infrastructure. The World Health Organisation predicts that by 2050, 70% of the global population will be urbanized. Amenity grasses on structures such as green roofs are exposed to much greater stresses than those in more conventional applications. Our aim is therefore to develop more robust green infrastructures using grass and legume species to enhance the built environment and make future cities more resilient to current and future climates, e.g. by optimizing water and energy management, reducing the urban heat island effect and pollution, and improving human health and well-being. The main scientific objectives of the proposed partnership award are therefore to develop long term collaborations in the following areas: 1. Assist in the collection of grass and legume germplasm in Taiwan to broaden the genetic diversity of grass and legume species suitable for green infrastructure and landscape architecture in Taiwan and in the UK. 2. Evaluate the resilience of grass and legume species that can tolerate stresses such as drought, flooding, wind erosion, temperature extremes, shade, air pollution, and can minimize dust creation, and contaminated water supplies under challenging urban environmental conditions in Taiwan. 3. Identify opportunities for commercialization and explore the possible environmental utilization such as soil stabilization and flood control etc. through technology innovation. 4. Facilitate the development of a new generation of grassland, green infrastructure, environmental sciences and climate impact researchers through international and interdisciplinary collaborative research. 5. Create wider impacts globally in other countries especially in Asia and Africa to address several global challenges facing these countries.高耐受草皮草種在都市綠色基礎設施之利用(2/2)
