Since Taiwan has had a popularly elected president, most elections have more than two candidates vying for the post. However, the 2020 elections are essentially different from the previous ones. In the past, most of the non-KMT and non-DPP candidates were politicians split from the two main parties to challenge those party nominees. The third force in the 2020 election, however, is not from the division of the old parties, but from a new political force. The political landscape of the party representing Taiwan may come to a critical juncture. Taiwan ’s two-party system might be altered by the joining of these new forces and begins to develop a multi-party system, or one of the new forces might replace an old political party, shifting the long-prevailing social and ideological cleavages and forming a new two-party system. In any case, the rise of new forces and political outsiders is a phenomenon worthy of attention. Based on this, this research aims to answer the following questions: Why did Taiwan appear at this time to be different from the past in which new forces become viable challengers to traditional politicians? What are the reasons for this phenomenon? Answering these questions helps us understand the reasons for the rise of political outsiders and its impact on the development of democratic politics in Taiwan.
