(Tan et al., 2005; <br> Abstract: This project is to understand the neural mechanism of language processing, the interaction of orthography and phonology in accessing meaning from Chinese characters. There are two aims in the project. First, this study uses a primed lexical decision task to assess the processes of the phonetic radical, including regularity and consistency effects. Second, this study examines the separate influences of orthography and phonology, as well as the interaction between them, on character recognition in Chinese. Behavioral evidence (Chou, 2003; Chou et al., 2005) has demonstrated that orthographic and phonological sources of information interact to yield recognition and comprehension of written Chinese. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is further planned to evaluate the relationship between the behavioral performance and brain activity. The first year will conduct two fMRI studies to find out the brain regions that are involved in the interaction of orthographic and phonological information during lexical decision, using SOAs of 50ms and 250ms. The second year will use a fairly new technique, effective connectivity, to explore both forward and backward connections within these brain regions. The expected results will advance our knowledge of how the brain process phonology and orthography. Moreover, the findings will be helpful to disentangle the arguments about the interactive processing of phonology and orthography between two competing hypotheses (Tan et al., 2005 and Lee et al., 2004).功能性核磁共振造影字形字音字彙判斷促發fMRIorthographyphonologylexical decisionprimingNeural Correlates of Regularity and Consistency Effects on Chinese Characters
