Previous intentional studies suggest that LGBT populations have their own unique healthcare issues, healthcare behaviors and healthcare needs. Social support is a significant factor associated with LGBT populations’ utilization rates of health and social resources. Furthermore, healthcare issues within aging LGBT populations have been widely discussed by health-related professionals due to the coming acceleration of global population aging. In addition to healthcare issues, formal and informal social care resources have also paid attention, discussed and studied. However, there is a lacked of healthcare research on LGBT populations in Taiwan. Based on literature review in this current research proposal, limitations of healthcare studies conducted with Taiwanese LGBT populations include: 1) nearly half of Taiwanese LGBT healthcare studies focused on HIV or sexual transmitted diseases; 2) many of the studies were qualitative studies with small sample sizes; 3) majority of the studies had been designed without a healthcare theory as research framework; and 4) target populations of the previous Taiwanese LGBT healthcare studies were mainly gay and lesbians. There is a lacked of healthcare studies conducted with bisexual and transgender populations. Hence, a three-year research proposal was designed based on the ecological systems theory. The aims of the three-year research include: 1) the first-year research is to understand health status, healthcare needs and utilization rates of healthcare services within Taiwanese LGBT populations; 2) the second-year research is to explore and to survey issues of healthy aging and accessible healthcare and social care resources within Taiwanese LGBT populations 50 years of age or older, and also to understand willingness, related training needs and barriers of providing healthcare and social care services among possible health and social service providers; 3) the third-year research is to design health promotion strategies based on results from the first- and the second-year research and to provide the services in order promote the LGBT populations’ health status and their quality of life.女同志男同志雙性戀者跨性別者健康照護差距健康促進Lesbiangaybisexualtransgenderhealthcare disparities and healthy promotionHealth Status, Health Needs and Health Promotion Strategies among Sexual Minority Populations in Taiwan
