<br> Abstract: Considering that The Tale of Genji remains ambiguous even after many interpretations, the applicant reinvestigates some questionable annotations in the dissertation. In fact, many editions of The Tale of Genji were yielded during the process of the composition and proofreading of the masterpiece. That is why the common meaning of a sentence needs to be confirmed first for annotation. This is the applicant’s motivation of studying The Tale of Genji. In the past, most scholars, who thought that “Aobyoushibon” edited by Fujiwara no Sadaie was the edition closest to the prototype, have focused on the restoration of Aobyoushibon. However, over the past few years, many scholars discover that, before The Tale of Genji came out, the transcripts and manuscripts of the work had existed and that they should not be conservative and narrow-minded but open to other editions. This is why many researchers begin to investigate other non-prototype proofreading editions. However, this kind of research is insufficient. First, the editions represented by Munyuubon that appeared in the medieval Japan are too different from the mainstream Ooshimabon to be ignored. Secondly, this type of texts has three transcripts, among which Arimabon as a successful manuscript has been circulated in this modern world. However, there are little comprehensive investigation on this edition in the academic circles so far since the precedent study only focuses on the editors’ interpretation of the characters in The Tale of Genji. For this reason, the applicant strives to compare different editions rather than explore the characters. Based on the survival of the texts, the dissertation discusses the passages in Wakana Jyou and Ge that are 15 words less than those in other editions and concludes that the simplification is for the purpose of refining the redundant words or sentences. In fact, since The Tale of Genji totals 54 volumes, the investigation of two of them is not enough to unfold the whole masterpiece. Moreover, the dissertation only gives a few examples of substitutes and extending sentences but not explore them completely. Accordingly, the project intends to survey the volumes from Kiritubo and deepen the discussion on the causes of the two aforementioned variations. By doing so, it hopes to contribute to the inheritance of The Tale of Genji and the condition how people enjoyed this tale.
