However, tomato, especially in tropical area, is suffering from some diseases such as bacterial wilt, bacterial spot, tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), fusarium wilt, and gray leaf spot. Looking for the strategies to cure the disease effectively becomes important. The project is to introduce Arabidopsis FIN219(AtFIN219) and tomato FIN219(LeFIN219) into tomato, hoping to obtain disease-resistant transgenic tomatoes. AtFIN219 has been shown to be involved in phytochrome A-mediated light signaling pathway, and inducible by auxin and jasmonate, which is well documented to play important roles in plant defensive system. Recently, AtFIN219 is found to be allelic to JAR1, which is involved in jasmonate signaling pathway. By yeast two-hybrid screening, an AtFIN219-interacting protein FIP1 was recovered and demonstrated to interact with the C-terminal region of AtFIN219. FIP1 encodes a 102 amino-acid glutathione-S-transferase, which is involved in detoxification of herbicides and pathogens. Furthermore, FIP1 is also induced by 2,4-D and jasmonate based on the results of Northern Blot assays, suggesting that AtFIN219 is a light-regulated component involved in plant defense and plant growth and development. In addition, LeFIN219 has a 68% identity with AtFIN219 and its message is found to be present in a cDNA library constructed from elicitor-infected samples, implying that LeFIN219 is inducible by pathogens.
