The goal is to train interdisciplinary scientists for disaster prevention, and monitoring, evaluating, and even predicting effects of nature disasters on ecosystems. Fundamentally, disasters affect not only human beings but also the ecosystem where humans reside. The changes of ecosystems caused by any disaster likely have negative feedback on human society. For example, heavy rain induces flood; it also causes mudslides and brings pollutants into rivers and water reservoirs, which in turn deteriorates quality of drinking waters. In an extreme case, it can cause harmful algal blooms. Therefore, monitoring, evaluating, and predicting effects of nature disasters on ecosystems is closely related to human daily life. In order to predict effects of nature disasters on ecosystems, we must have capability to efficiently monitor the ecosystem. The goals of this proposal is to train students to 1) develop automatic sensing system that can effectively collect both environmental and biological data, and consider to employ robots to retrieve the real-time information from the field (cooperation with Prof. Kang, Dept. of Civil Engineering, NTU) 2) construct database and visualization system to efficiently use the data, and 3) use correct statistical tools to analyze the data and develop an ecosystem model (cooperation with Prof. Kuo, Dept. of Atmospheric Science, NTU), and 4) use the model to predict effects of nature disasters on ecosystems. We will use research in Feitsui reservoir as an example and pay special attention on water quality. The results might be used to inform the decision making for water resource management (cooperation with Prof. Yu, Dept. of Atmospheric Science, NTU)自動化監測統計及數學分析資訊整合生態系模式水資源品質Automatic sensing systemStatistical and mathematical analysisinformation systemecosystem modelingwater resource quality99-B6-2利用自動化監測系統評估與預測災害對生態系統之衝擊
