However, how these two mechanisms interact remains unclear to date. In this research proposal, I hypothesize that top-down modulatory mechanisms serve as a common architecture for attention and working memory. I will test whether and how top-down modulatory mechanisms can influence working memory encoding (Experiment series 1, first year) and maintenance (Experiment series 2, second year) in a biased competitive fashion. I will also show that the underlying neural processes of top-down modulation of working memory are analogues to those of perceptual processing. More importantly, I will converge multiple cognitive and brain imaging methods including behavioural measures, electroencephalography, event-related potentials and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to establish the link between brain and behaviour. This research proposal will reinforce the notion of working memory representations that can be modulated dynamically and continuously by top-down modulation according to our task goals and behavioural expectations, biasing competition in favour of task-relevant information.
