More importantly, news media also play a significant role in constructing images of medical technologies, and defining their social meanings and values. Medical technologies could be used in life-saving, such as cancer treatment, as well as in selective cosmetic plastic procedure. Even though, they have completely different implications, these medical technologies, more or less, are all involved with uncertainty in their effects and risks. In the highly competitive market, health care institutes endeavor to promote their services and to attract journalists to cover stories from their interests. In addition, journalists also need medical experts to provide the newest and professional information. Journalists and medical experts depend on each other. Moreover, journalists also face that more and more product placements interfere their reporting. Therefore, this two-year study aims to explore and compare how news coverage constructs cancer treatment and cosmetic plastic procedures. The research aims are to (1) analyze the news text to examine how news coverage constructs these two different types of medical technologies, and (2) explore what factors in news producing process influence the news constructions. In the first year, using discourse analysis and content analysis, I will analyze the news text to investigate and compare the news construction of cancer treatment and cosmetic plastic surgery. Discourse analysis examines the media contents in the social, cultural and political context. It views that media messages both reflect and construct societal value, beliefs, and ideology which may not overtly be noticed by producers and readers. Therefore, this study used discourse analysis to explore what social value and beliefs regarding cancer treatment and cosmetic plastic procedure were constructed in the news coverage. In addition, quantitative content analysis will be used to describe the quantitative differences, such as news sources, the portrayals of benefit and risk, between these two medical treatments. In the second year, using in-depth interview, I will interview medical journalists to investigate in the news production process, what factors influence their construction of these two medical treatments, specifically focusing on how news values, their interaction with news sources, and the matters of product placements influence the news constructions.新聞建構醫療科技新聞產製news constructionmedical technologynews production醫療科技的新聞建構
