We first compare the advantage of horizontal alliances and non-horizontal alliances from the aspects of the incentives, benefits and cost of forming alliances based on existing literatures. We find that horizontal alliances could derive more benefits than non-horizontal alliances in most of parts. In 2006, Gomes-Casseres et al. illustrate alliances do promote knowledge flows no matter alliances are horizontal or non-horizontal. When examining the strength of knowledge flows in our paper, the results show that knowledge flows within horizontal alliances are larger than that within non-horizontal alliances and it is consistent with the previous results. We further investigate the performance of knowledge flows. We discover that the acquired knowledge flows from non-horizontal alliance partners contribute significantly to the future development of firms; however, there is no statistic significance in horizontal alliance sample. Besides, results suggest that high-tech level of company and agreement types of alliances will influence the strength and contribution of knowledge flows within alliances. Same-country alliances have better outcomes than cross-border alliances in strength and performance of knowledge flows sections.Contentshapter 1 Introduction and Motivation 1hapter 2 Literature Review 4.1 Alliances and industry relatedness research 4.1.1 The incentives and benefits of forming alliances 4.1.2 The cost of strategic alliances 8.1.3 Impacts of homogeneity and heterogeneity on alliances 10.2 Knowledge within alliances and industry relatedness 13hapter 3 Hypothesis Development 15hapter 4 Data Sources and Methodology 19.1 Data and Sample Selection 19.2 Methodology and variables 22.2.1 The strength of knowledge flows within alliances 22.2.2 The contribution of knowledge flows within alliances 24hapter 5 Results 27.1 The strength of knowledge flows within alliances 27.2 The performance of knowledge flows within alliances 31.2.1 The basic results of knowledge flows’ performance within alliances 31.2.2 The robust testing of knowledge flows’ performance within alliances 33hapter 6 Conclusion 41eference 46application/pdf306667 bytesapplication/pdfen-US產業相關性知識流策略聯盟Industry RelatednessKnowledge FlowsAlliances產業相關性與策略聯盟間的知識流Industry Relatedness and Knowledge Flows within Alliancesthesishttp://ntur.lib.ntu.edu.tw/bitstream/246246/182834/1/ntu-98-R96723016-1.pdf
