In order to evaluate the overall distribution and the amount of gas hydrate in-place in the area offshore southwestern Taiwan, this project intends to expand the seismic survey coverage from the previous gas hydrate survey lines southwestward to cover the Kaoping slope and the Chinese continental slope area to water depths of 2000 m. In addition, this project will also compile and examine the sub-bottom profiling (3.5 kHz or chirp sonar) data to provide high-resolution images of shallow sea floor sediment distribution for better constraining the distribution of gas hydrate. The seismic reflection data collected will be used to evaluate the energy resource potential of the region, and to pin-point a few “sweet spots” for coring, high-resolution surveys, and possible future drilling targets. Besides regional seismic survey, this project will also collect a small 3D seismic data set in a selected area where ocean bottom seismometer experiment will be conducted simultaneously with the 3D seismic reflection survey for the purpose of providing better velocity and structural controls to the structures and gas hydrate distribution of the survey area, and to gain experiences for the future 3D seismic surveys. In fact, seismic reflection investigation plays a vital role in this integrated gas hydrate investigation program of the Central Geological Survey. Not only the seismic reflection data could be used to map the distribution of the gas hydrate, it could also provide critical information for coring and future drilling sites selection, and for gas hydrate volumetric estimation.
