In that period, the Tokugawa shogunate imposed the strictest rules on its temples and monasteries. Although Chu denied that he ever suggested Tokugawa Mitukuni abolish Buddhism nor made any anti-Buddhist remark, Japan’s academic community had recounted the key role played by Zhu in the seemingly endless dispute over Confucianism and Buddhism in modern time Japan. What was the truth? This project plans to investigate the correspondences then and the literature on Mitohan of that period and Tokugawa Mitukuni to clarify whether Zhu had influenced the religious policy of the Mitohan. It is prevalent in the complete works on Zhu Shun-Shui and the author’s own collection of Zhu’s letters in Japan his severe criticism on Buddhist thinking. But articles about Zhu’s viewpoints on Buddhism and the comparison between Zhu’s Buddhist thinking and that of Japanese Confucian scholars are exceptionally few. However, Zhu’s interpretation of the Buddhist thinking and his influence on modern time Confucian and Buddhist communities of Japan and vice versa warrant further clarification. This project intends to make an in-depth research on the topic that has been overlooked by both the Chinese and Japanese academics, and take steps to draw a complete picture of Zhu’s views on all systems of thoughts to eventually turn the studies on Zhu into an international undertaking. This project intends to spend one year to explore the following three subjects: 1. Zhu Shun-Shui’s Buddhist thinking and the interactions between him and Tokugawa Mitukuni and Mitahan Confucian scholars. 2. Zhu Shun-Shui’s Buddhist thinking and the interactions between him and Oubaku Zen monk and Tsao Dong Zen monk. 3. Comparing the Buddhist views of Zhu Shun Shui with those of Ito Jinsai (1627-1705) and Ito Tougai (1670-1736), and their interactions. This project purports to analyze Zhu Shun-Shui’s anti-Buddhist thinking through the exploration and compilation of new historical materials to objectively define the role of Zhu Shun Shui in the conversion process of modern Japanese society from Buddhism to neo-Confucianism.朱舜水德川光圀伊藤仁齋反佛思想Zhu Shun-ShuiTokugawa MitukuniIto Jinsaianti-Buddhism朱舜水的佛學思想與近世日本儒、佛學界的相互影響
