Three new briarane-type diterpenoids, briacavatolides A-C (1-3) as well as two known briaranes, briaexcavatolide U (4) and briaexcavatin L (5) were isolated from the acetone extract. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by extensive NMR spectroscopic analysis and physical data. The anti-HCMV (human cytomegalovirus) activity of 1-5 and their cytotoxicity against selected cancer cell lines were evaluated. ? 2012 by the authors.Anti-HCMV; Briarane-type diterpenoid; Briareum excavatum; Cytotoxicity[SDGs]SDG3antivirus agent; briacavatolide A; briacavatolide B; briacavatolide C; briaexcavatin L; briaexcavatolide U; cytotoxic agent; diterpenoid; mithramycin; unclassified drug; antineoplastic agent; biological product; briaexcavatin; diterpene; animal cell; antineoplastic activity; antiviral activity; article; Briareum excavatum; cancer cell culture; cancer cell destruction; cancer inhibition; carbon nuclear magnetic resonance; colon adenocarcinoma; concentration response; controlled study; cytomegalovirus infection; drug determination; drug isolation; drug structure; human; human cell; IC 50; lung carcinoma; lymphatic leukemia; marine species; nonhuman; proton nuclear magnetic resonance; structure analysis; animal; aquatic species; cell strain HT29; chemistry; Cytomegalovirus; drug effect; isolation and purification; mouse; nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; Taiwan; tumor cell line; Briareum excavatum; Human herpesvirus 5; Animals; Antineoplastic Agents; Aquatic Organisms; Biological Agents; Cell Line, Tumor; Cytomegalovirus; Diterpenes; HT29 Cells; Humans; Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy; Mice; TaiwanBriacavatolides A-C, NewBriaranes from the Taiwanese Octocoral Briareum excavatumjournal article10.3390/md100510192-s2.0-84862900865
