In order to gather more information toward answering this question, I propose to study active structures and their tectonic implications across two major but very different plate boundaries: the western central Andes, northern Chile, and the active suture of Taiwan. The proposed project would be based upon geomorphic and structural investigations. For the Andean belt, knowledge of the active deformations in northern Chile is crucial to better understand the current distribution of convergence across the central Andean orogenic belt and the long-term tectonic and structural characteristics of the Chilean subduction zone. This will lead to a better understanding of the nature of future large earthquakes along this belt. The project consists of two parts: For the Andean belt, proposed work would focus on several target areas surrounding the Preandean Depression, northern Chile, where, based upon preliminary mapping and a pilot field trip, potentially important active structures and dating materials to constrain their ages are present. For Taiwan, the proposed work would be the continuation of my previous investigations, which focus on the characterization of active structures in eastern Taiwan. By determining the timing of activity of major structures in western central Andes, I hope to quantitatively understand the tectonic evolution of the area, and address questions about the differences between short-term and long-term measurements of deformation. A specific hypothesis to test is whether major onland structures are currently absorbing a substantial amount of plate convergence across the central Andean belt. Such results will then be compared with the information obtained across the Taiwan orogen. This will lead to further understanding of active deformation and strain accumulation across plate boundaries, and the differences between these two very different types of plate boundaries.板塊邊緣安地斯山新構造運動台灣plate boundariesAndesneotectonicsTaiwan板塊邊界之活動構造與應力分布:安地斯山中西部與台灣的新構造運動(2/3)
