However, without a comprehensive sampling of organisms that reflects the phylogenetic diversity of the studied taxa, the obtained conclusion may be distorted. Indeed, the existing model systems in Teleostei belong exclusively to one of the three main groups: the Clupeocephala (the others being Osteoglossomorpha and Elopomorpha). In this review, we propose the Elopomorpha, the basal-most lineage, as a new model group. General background on the taxa as well as research progress on their evolution including the state of the art of phylogenetic and genomic hypotheses is presented.
