In this project, I will consider women writers’ representations and engagements with Asia in the global context—global explorations, imperial investments, international commerce, and political changes, etc.—through a closer examination of the concepts of “respectability” and cosmopolitanism. This project will look at ideas of mobility, travel, and various forms of exchange (knowledge production and distribution, for example) in the literary landscape of the Romantic period. A revisit of the diverse interlinkages between different cultures, societies, and between individual imaginings of the world would allow a better understanding of how women fashioned their roles as writers to comment on issues beyond national borders at a critical moment in history. This project, upon completion, hopes to offer alternative readings of female responses towards the confluence of cultures, traditions, and peoples at this turbulent time.
