Ocean. Xenophone: A Han Poetic Vision on Ocean and Seas in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Transpacific Imaginations From maritime East Asia, South China Sea, and to the Pacific Ocean, these were the three fluid fields where overseas Han (or, Chinese) poetry 【域外漢詩】met and spread in the Late Qing Dynasty. By describing these border-crossing writing experiences manifested in the Han poetry, along with an exploration of its content within a spatial framework focusing on the image of the ocean, this project seeks to observe how these overseas writers migrated, immigrated, or traveled in foreign new lands and different countries, how they gradually formed a literati community and how the characteristics and forms of their writings underwent a change during the process of diaspora. When a geographical framework of ocean is employed to describe the development of the Han poetry in East Asia and South East Asia, we resort to the circulation and production of the Chinese language overseas in order to reflect on the relationships between the specific ocean environment and its surrounding lands. A reflection as such, however, provides us with a possibility to describe different experiences, perspectives, language variation and a new genealogy of knowledge manifested in the works of these border-crossing poets. Meanwhile, this project attempts to investigate how their poetry writings, though written outside China, correspond to the long-lasting tradition of Chinese poetry in terms of nation imagination, geographical space and material experiences. Moreover, these approaches and discussions on their poetic writings are of help; they bring us a deeper understanding of the process of dissemination of the Han poetry and the interconnected network between the migration of the poets and the production of literature. They also help to explain how the development of this genre, under the oceanic vision, differs from one region to another region, or from one country to another country.
