Abstract: This project studies how texts metaphorically incorporate and use concrete artisan tools such as compasses (kuēi 規), squares (chǚ 矩), levels (chǔn 準) and potter’s wheels(chǖn 鈞) in the formative period of Chinese thought (ca. 500-100 BC). By focusing attention on the metaphorical use of language, the current project is not only related to contemporary discussions on metaphor in philosophy and linguistics, it also fits into a growing field of research that approaches ancient Chinese philosophy by looking at the various ways in which philosophical ideas are structured and expressed. This is at variance with the more traditional approach that studies Chinese philosophy by dealing more directly with the philosophical ideas involved. Although this relatively new area of research has seen a number of important studies, the topic of artisan tool metaphors has been largely overlooked. It thus provides an ideal opportunity to make a significant contribution to the ongoing scholarly debate. The project runs over a period of two years. In addition to extensive reading in metaphor theory, it consists of three main stages. The first stage presents an overview and classification of the various artisan tools that need to be studied. The second stage examines the distribution of the relevant tools throughout the philosophical literature of Warring States and early Han China, and examines whether different lineages of thought tend to favor different tools. The final stage consists of an interpretation of the role of the artisan tools in the development of ancient philosophical discourse, and applies insights drawn from contemporary metaphor theory to the analysis of artisan tool metaphors. As the proposed project is the first systematic and comprehensive study of artisan tool metaphors in ancient China, it will contribute to academic discussion in several ways. Within the field of Chinese philosophy, it will shed new light on the use of metaphor in ancient China in general, and it will contribute to the ongoing scholarly attention to forms of argumentation in early Chinese philosophy. In a broader sense, it will deepen our understanding of the relation between philosophy and rhetoric. I intend to make these contributions by participating in two international conferences and by publishing at least one article in an A&HCI journal.
