<br> Abstract: This umbrella research project reflects an interdisciplinary integration of expertise on China studies drawn from political science, economics, sociology, and social work in the College of Social Sciences, NTU. The five individual research projects under the umbrella project rest on such expertise, while seeking to generate meaningful dialogues with the HIS’ grand project of East Asian Civilization. The primary goal of this umbrella project is to foster the synergies between the scrutiny of contemporary China’s actual political, economic, and social developments, and the global epistemic community’s comprehension of China which would shape the analytic standpoints and evaluative orientations of the field of China studies. Sub-project 1, 3, and 4 under the umbrella project explore China’s actual developments, and sub-project focuses on the aspect of epistemic community. Standing between them is sub-project 5. To maximize the synergies capable of academic contribution to social sciences, most of the sub-projects entertain a comparative approach where China’s actual developments or cultural/epistemic peculiarities are juxtaposed with those of the other societies in East Asia or even at a global level. This approach serves dual functions. On the one hand, since China is positioned at the core of the comparisons, a broad and possibly complete picture with regard to China’s subjectivity is likely to emerge. On the other hand, the comparisons facilitate the discovery of both convergences and divergences between China and the external referents, and thereby call for a reconceptualization of to what extent China’s subjectivity embodied in either empirical realities or the universe of ideations and civilizations is to be transformed and redefined.
