<br> Abstract: A Modern Introduction to International Law was first published in 1970, and very rapidly established itself as the most widely-used and successful introduction to international law on the market. Students of the subject — within departments of law and political science alike — are most fortunate that continuing demand for the book has allowed a sixth fully revised and reset edition to be made available. International law does not stand still, and this new revision will confirm Dr Akehurst’s text as quite simply the most comprehensive and up-to-date in its field. The book’s first chapter ‘Is international law really law?’ seeks to show how international law works and why states obey it; it aims to dispel the skepticism which many students feel when they approach the study of international law for the first time. Dr Akehurst goes on to deal with all the topics which normally form part of a university course on international law — from diplomatic immunity to human rights, and from recognition of governments to war crimes. But the treatment is original in several respects. Dr Akehurst is particularly concerned with the relationship between international law and international politics, and he devotes special attention to the more controversial topics of international law (such as self-determination, and the expropriation of foreign-owned property) where the conflicting interests and attitudes of different states are most apparent. For this new sixth edition, Dr Akehurst has extensively revised and updated the text to take account of many new developments. For instance, the chapter on civil wars has been largely re-written in the light of the International Court judgement in June 1986 in the case concerning United States aid to the contras in Nicaragua. A Modern Introduction to International Law therefore contains a remarkable amount of information and has proves itself to be the ideal textbook for law students. At the same time, its lucid and untechnical style makes it a stimulating introduction to international law, which will be enjoyed by students of international politics and by anyone with an interest in international affairs.
