The growth in the number of tourists of whale watching is listed as the fastest in the world. This fast growth of whale watching in the eastern Taiwan has brought potential impact to cetacean ecological habit. In order to help designing sustainable management policy or strategies, my team would like to take a study on the impact of whale watching from the aspects of cetacean resource and behavioral ecology. The study purpose are: (1) establish the basic data on cetacean species composition, relative abundance, sighting rates, spatial and temporal variation, and the relationship between distribution and environmental factors, (2) establish the cetacean populations’ home range, daily activity pattern, acoustic pattern and their interaction with whale watching boats at Ilan and Hualien waters. In addition, we will establish photo ID data to analyze their social organizations. These data will offer for future decision making on the whale-watching regulation, e.g. boat behaviors and cruise carrying capacity.
