<br> Abstract: This project will broadly cover Wang Yangming`s "conception of the self," specifically focusing on four elements of the self: mind (xin), moral mind (zhi), consciousness (yi), and things (wu). It will involve a fresh look at the concepts and theories in the texts concerning these four elements, and will attempt to analyze how the Yangming school influenced the conception of the self and the conception of the person in late Ming thought. The four elements of self - mind, moral mind, consciousness, things - are not treated identically by Wang and the later members of his school. However, for all of these thinkers, consideration of these four elements is a necessity when discussing origin-substance (benti) and moral cultivation (gongfu). For this reason, they are an important focus in an examination of the conception of the person and the conception of the self in the Yangming school. Of the four elements, a reading based on "pure knowledge" (liang zhi xue) of the "mind-self," the "moral mind-self," and the "consciousness-self" can be taken as the core of the conception of the self; a reading of "things-self" based on the theory of "humanity united with the myriad things"(the Ren of –Wanwu-Yu) is a very important universal ideal in the conception of the person. These four concepts therefore afford us a direct approach to the distinctive features of the conception of the person and conception of the self in the Yangming school. In addition, this approach to the conceptions of person and self affords a fairly comprehensive way to integrate and analyze Wang and later members of the Yangming school. This represents a step forward in Yangming studies, and will be useful for the academic understanding and application of the conception of the self in traditional Confucian scholarship. It will also have reference value for research into Chinese indigenous psychology. Over its first two years, this project will focus on the four elements of the self as the key to the "theory of knowing oneself" in Wang Yangming and the Yangming school. Wang`s theory of pure knowledge is also richly relevant to our times: its attitudes include a critical stance towards politics, and support for equality, subjective freedom, and enlightened scholarship. In its latter one years, the project will emphasize "the transformation of the self," focusing specifically on these modern applications. Wang YangmingYangming schoolconception of the personconception of the selfpure knowledge校長機動款-明儒的人觀與我觀:王陽明與陽明學派
