However, the dependence of such research on expensive and sophisticated equipments has rendered a major obstacle for researchers in this country to carry out their studies on mind and brain. This has contributed to and will further aggravate our lag-behind in this field internationally. To resolve this problem, National Taiwan University, in cooperation with National Taiwan Normal University and National Taipei University of Education, proposes this project of “Initiative for Integrated Research on Brain, Mind and Culture”. In this project, National Taiwan University will offer a space in a to-be-newly-built Medical Engineering Hall or other two locations as designated by the National Science Council to install a set of magnetic resonance imaging equipment and a set of magnetoencephalography equipment, as well as other needed accessories. The operation, maintenance and integration of these two equipments shall be supported by the superb medical engineering technology in National Taiwan University. These two sets will be open to all humanity and social science researchers. Additionally, this project proposes to install a five-member supporting team to assist researchers of humanity and social sciences on hardware operation, software design and running, image analysis or neuroscience consulting, such that a researcher can invest his or her own effort on subject idea testing without worrying all difficulties that might be encountered during implementing the test on the machine. In order to facilitate a smooth transition into brain research for humanity and social science scholars, this project will also hold various types of training program, establish and promote research ethic standards, organize consulting groups, and device cross-communication mechanisms among disciplines. It is expected that this project will be able to enlarge the scope of view and enhance the capability of research for humanity and social science researchers, and will allow them to construe and test the mind-brain relationship by taking into account perspectives of individual characteristics, cultural impact and life development. The consequence of this joint effort may eventually lead to break-through on three fundamental issues in the realm of mind science: “mind-body problem”, “nature-nurture problem” and “functional localization problem”.核磁共振造影設備腦磁波設備心智歷程大腦活動文化社會情境核心儀magnetic resonance imagingmagnetocephalographymental processesbrain心智科學大型研究設備建置及共同使用服務計畫--大腦/心智與文化整合性研究
