The research will take a cross-regional comparative approach and explore the Chinese diaspora. The first year will focus on building foundational knowledge. Experts from both Greater China and the U.S. will contribute to publications intended for use by philanthropists, foundation and corporate giving staff, community-based organizations, educators, media, policymakers and the general public. The proposed projects will have the following major components: (1) Foundational Knowledge Research: Developing foundational knowledge through reviewing secondary data and existing literature; (2) Primary Research: Discovering new knowledge through primary social science research on philanthropy, civil society and key sectors; (3) Evaluation Research: Evaluating case studies to examine the impacts of philanthropy; and (4) Translational Research: Translating research into instrumental knowledge to improve policies, programs and practice. FOUNDATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT Scope of Work – Assessment of Data Availability As part of the Global Chinese Philanthropy Initiative, Foundational Research Project, the researcher will lead the assessment of data availability for the Greater China study areas. The assessment will inform data collection for the development of an overview analysis on the magnitude, patterns and trajectory of Chinese philanthropy, and a theoretical/conceptual framework to guide primary, evaluation and translational research. The researcher will conduct the data assessment along the following dimensions: • Temporal and geographic coverage (time period and areas covered); • Temporal resolution (how frequently data are available and timeliness); • Spatial resolution and boundaries (size and edges of objects, pixel meter); • Geocoding (how objects are or can be spatially referenced); • Level of content details (spatial attributes); • Subject coverage (segments covered, sampling method) • Consistency over time (spatial objects and attributes); • Accessibility (cost, restrictions related to confidentiality and ownership); and • Longitudinal linkage (ability to link cross-sectional spatial data).Global Chinese Philanthropy Initiative-Foundational Reaearch Project
