The NWP provides accurate weather forecasts and extreme weather forecasts for Taiwan. According to NCEP’s report in the 2nd Taiwan West Pacific Global Forecast System Development Workshop in 2017, the Finite Volume Cubed-Sphere Dynamical Core (FV3) global model has been planned to be NCEP Global Forecast System (NCEPGFS). The model is also planned to be a community model. CWB follows up the community model approach and to collaborate closely with NCEP, starts to build FV3 as the operating global model in high-performance computing (HPC) environment. In the past three years, CWB had successfully built Taiwan FV3 (TFV3) global model with C384T (25 km resolution) in HPC and a nested domain (4.8 km resolution) around Taiwan. However, considering the model’s performance in forecasting and the parallel development with the NCEP, a high-resolution TFV3 will be needed in the future with sufficient computer resources. The goal of this three-year project is to build and test a new C768T (13 km resolution) TFV3 with higher resolution in the nested domain (2-3 km resolution) around Taiwan. Forecasting performance will be tested by adjusting model physics for high-resolution settings under CWB’s HPC environment. A new TFV3 global model with high resolution will be provided at the end of this three-year project.CWB Global Forecast System, Taiwan FV3, numerical weather prediction中央氣象局高解析度全球作業模式發展與評估研究(1/3)
