Meanwhile, these technicians need work at height over a certain amount of time and may suffer in a highly risky work environment. In this study, a beam-to-beam structural connector design is proposed for a temporary bridge with an automated assembly solution. This design procedure accompanies a mobile crane and aims at (1) unmanned operations at height, (2) the connector with a capability of supporting the weight of the beam; (3) simple assembly mechanism, (4) observable assembly process, and (5) massive production of the connector. Moreover, a workable prototype connector is also developed, and the mechanical behavior is studied and evaluated by the finite element method. As a result, this study provides an innovative construction-oriented design method for beam-to-beam connections of a temporary bridge as well as can contribute to the automation in construction. © 2021, Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering.
