Aims of NTU’s Freshman Chinese Course The aims of this course are to help students to improve their Chinese language skills for everyday life and for better job prospects, and to strengthen their humanistic quality, which defines the quality of personal life. II. Intention of the Improvement Program We implemented this program in response both to the deteriorating Chinese proficiency and humanistic quality of the native students, and to the overseas Chinese and international students’ needs in specific learning situations with specific goals. III. Outline of the Improvement Program A. Chinese Placement Test for Overseas Chinese and International Students The practice of placing students with varied levels in Chinese proficiency together with the expectation that all students learn at the same pace and with the same motivation, had contributed to the inefficiency in both learning and teaching. To better the situation, we require oversea Chinese and international students to take Chinese Placement Test to determine their Chinese proficiency upon their arrival. Students are placed in classes according to their test results: 1. Overseas Chinese students who fail the test will be enrolled in a training class designed particularly for them. They are also required to participate in the “Chinese Tutoring Class for Overseas Chinese Students.” 2. Overseas Chinese students who pass the test will be enrolled in the “Class for Overseas Chinese and International Students (COCIS).” Each college in NTU has at least one COCIS. 3. International students who fail the test are required to enroll for a year in the Chinese language course, funded by NTU or the Ministry of Education, in the Language Center at NTU. After completing this course, the students are required to take the “Special Chinese Class for International Students” (SCCIS) the next year. 4. International students who pass the test will be placed in COCIS or SCCIS according to their test results. B. Freshman Chinese and Reading Classics Website 1. To facilitate the acquisition and increase the variety of information on Freshman Chinese courses, we have integrated Freshman Chinese teachers’ course websites, the Freshman Chinese Website, and the Reading Classics Project Website into a multi-functional platform: National Taiwan University Freshman Chinese and Reading Classics Website. 2. The Freshman Chinese Website: The website is designed to encourage the reading of classics, to provide training in academic and creative writing, and to showcase outstanding student works. The website contains the following features: news and policy on Freshman Chinese course in general, links to individual Freshman Chinese course websites and related learning resources, video clips of academic and artistic events, and highlighted students works. 3. The Reading Classics Project Website: a. Annual writing showcase: The writing showcase honors the works of students recommended by the teachers in Freshman Chinese courses every academic year. b. Online forum: To promote students’ reading, we have made a Classics List which consists of 33 canonical works in total, ranging from pre-modern to modern/contemporary Chinese literature and philosophy. We also have facilitated a virtual platform for exchange of ideas and experience on reading classics among students and TAs (teaching assistants). Every year, TAs select distinguished discussion pieces among those submitted online for awards. c. The Reading Classics Project Passport: To facilitate an evaluation mechanism of the Project, the Department office of Chinese Literature will give a verification stamp to the students in Freshman Chinese classes who have read any work on the Classics List and successfully answer the questions proposed by TAs until the end of May (date tentative). 20 students will be chosen among those collecting more than 5 stamps for awards. If this pilot project is carried through, then it will expectedly be expanded to the rest of the university in the next academic year. Upon full project implementation, it is envisioned that the teachers are able to provide far more satisfying learning experiences for students and help them steadily improve their Chinese language skills and broaden their humanistic vision.僑生外籍生華語文能力檢測大一國文暨經典閱讀網站Chinese Placement Test for Overseas Chinese and International StudentsFreshman Chinese and Reading Classics Website100年度提升教學品質計畫/中文系/提升大一國文教學品質
