As a way of relating to oneself and the sensible world, the visual not only allowed for bodily participation in the divine but was also a focal point in cultural signification. However, medieval culture also harbored a central ambivalence in Christian attitudes toward vision that challenged its primacy with the inadequacy of the senses and the importance accorded to “the Word,” thus reiterating ancient iconoclastic polemics over the representative power of images and the ideological implications of visual stimulation. Various vernacular writings in late medieval England reflected, as they vigorously negotiated, the tension and intersection of visual culture and textual politics. The first-year project begins with two dream poems, The House of Fame and Pearl; the second-year project continues with the mystical writings of two important female visionaries, Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe; the third-year project will discuss Lollard iconoclasm and textual politics. Focusing on the intertwining visual and textual aspects of the Ricardian cultural poetics, this three-year study will investigate the intellectual energies that generated the period’s vernacular writings and examine how writers of different background addressed the issues of visuality and textuality. In so doing, it aims to explore the historical assumptions and cultural practices that defined and produced medieval visions and texts.
