This project involves using carbon materials that had been taken from recycled batteries as the precursors for fabricating capacitive deionization (CDI) water-purifying devices, and will be carried out by a collaboration of three institutions—National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), department of materials science and engineering (MSE) and department of electronics engineering (EE) and National Taiwan University (NTU), Environmental enginnering institute (EEI) and one company—Taiwan Puritic Corp. First, Prof. Wei’s group form MSE, NCTU will carry out plasma-assisted electrochemical exfoliation of carbon electrodes from recycled batteries for producing graphene nanosheets with their invented Taiwan and US patents, and then incorporate polymer microspheres into the graphene nanosheets for undergoing thermal treatments to produce mesoporous graphene nanosheets. Second, prof. Tseng’s group from EE, NCTU will combine produced mesoporous graphene nanosheets with MnO2 for making composite electrodes that are needed for CDI water-purifying devices, and analyze the electrochemical properties of the composite electrodes for optimizing their performances. Last, Prof. Huo from EEI, NTU will perform the fabrication of various CDI devices with the composite electrodes and test the CDI devices with various water sources. All three groups have their dedicated research expertise—graphene nanosheets, electrochemical analyses and CDI devices fabrication—in this project. The company that is involved in this project has been supporting the graphene nanosheets research for a few years. We plan to demonstrate these CDI devices that will be fabricated with our matertials and processes at the end of this project.
