Depressive symptoms can be associated with lower health-related quality of lifein perinatal period. However, few reports have addressed depression during pregnancy andpostpartum. The objectives of the proposed study are to describe and compare thedifferences in depression during prepregnancy, pregnancy and postpartum; to identify thefactors associated with depression in prepregnancy, pregnancy and postpartum; and toexamine the effect of depression during pregnancy on the postpartum depression. Methods:A longitudinal investigation will be performed in women at pregnancy and postpartum. Allparticipants will complete questionnaires that assess depression, sexual function, urinaryincontinence, body image, obstetric history and demographics. Participants who are in early,middle, late pregnancy and several time points in postpartum will be contacted to completethe questionnaires by mail or at study site clinics. The sample size was estimated by powercalculation. Approximately 400 women in early pregnancy will be recruited at a medicalcenter in Taipei, Taiwan. The study will be conducted over a 3-year period. Data analyseswill be performed using descriptive analyses, Cronbach’s α coefficient, Pearson correlationcoefficient, factor analysis,Fisher exact chi-square test and Multiple logistic regression.Anticipated Results: The characteristics of depression in the study population will beexamined, and a cause-effect model of depression during pregnancy and postpartum will beidentified.
