<br> Abstract: According to the summary statistics of historical data reported by the United States Department of Agriculture, the rate of U.S farm households that work off the farm is approximately 60% on average. Income from off-farm activity has been shown to be the primary source of total farm household income. Similar evidence has also been found in Taiwan. Based on the statistics summarized from the Agricultural Census data in year 2001, approximately 85% of the farm households have reported wage or income from the off-farm job. Therefore, the primary emphasis of this study is to have a better understanding of the off-farm work in Taiwan. The objective of this study is two-fold. First, we try to assess the role of human capital on the off-farm labor decision of farm households in Taiwan. In constrast to the previous studies, the special attention will be paid to examine the role of environmental characteristics and other government programs in Taiwan of farm households’ off-farm labor supply decision. Since the decision to work off the farm of the farm household may be affected by his neighbor’s decision, our second objective is to investigate whether the off-farm work decision in Taiwan exists the spatial depedent pattern. That is, we test how the off-farm work decision of each farm household is related to the decision of others. To the best of my understanding, this issue has not been studied elsewhere in the previous studies of farm households’ off-farm work decision. Our study also contributes to the linkage between geographic/engineering science and economics. To test the spatial depedency of off-farm work, the Geographic Information System (GIS) technique is utilized to identify the physical/locational charactristics. The application of GIS method to the field of economics helps to provide a objective measure of locational speciality. Therefore, our study provides an illustration that combines the knowledge between the field of geographic/engineering science and agricultural economics.
