Although these organic contaminants may be present at trace levels, their adverse effects on aquatic life, animals and even humans are a growing concern. Numerous studies have been published on the occurrence and fate of emerging organic contaminants in different parts of the world, spanning a wide range of sources and aquatic environments including freshwater catchments, effluent wastewater streams, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and marine waters. This paper reviews recent studies on the occurrence and fate of frequently detected pharmaceuticals and hormones and identifies areas that merit further research. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.Fate; Occurrence; Pharmaceuticals and hormones; Review; Surface water[SDGs]SDG6[SDGs]SDG11Adverse effect; Aquatic environments; Aquatic life; Emerging contaminant; Endocrine disruptor; Fate; Fresh water resources; Freshwater supply; Marine waters; Occurrence; Organic contaminant; Pharmaceuticals and hormones; Trace level; Wastewater streams; Animals; Catchments; Contamination; Effluents; Endocrinology; Hormones; Lake pollution; Marine pollution; Reservoirs (water); Surface active agents; Surface waters; Wastewater; Wastewater disposal; River pollution; atenolol; bezafibrate; carbamazepine; chloramphenicol; ciprofloxacin; cyclophosphamide; diclofenac; diltiazem; endocrine disruptor; ethinylestradiol; florfenicol; fresh water; furosemide; hydrochlorothiazide; ibuprofen; insecticide; lincomycin; melengestrol acetate; ofloxacin; paracetamol; ranitidine; salbutamol; sea water; sulfamethoxazole; surface water; surfactant; thiamphenicol; trenbolone; trimethoprim; unindexed drug; drug; environmental fate; freshwater; hormone; organic pollutant; surface water; water resource; aquatic environment; aquatic species; catchment; chlorination; disinfection; estuary; freshwater environment; nonhuman; organic waste; oxidation; priority journal; review; river; stream (river); toxicology; urbanization; waste component removal; waste disposal; waste water management; water contamination; water supply; Endocrine Disruptors; Environment; Fresh Water; Hormones; Insecticides; Organic Chemicals; Pharmaceutical Preparations; Surface-Active Agents; Water Pollutants, Chemical; Water Pollution, Chemical; AnimaliaImpacts of emerging organic contaminants on freshwater resources: Review of recent occurrences, sources, fate and effectsjournal article10.1016/j.scitotenv.2010.09.026
