"A growing body of research has focused on the effects of exercise on the cognitive function of children. Moreover, some studies have begun to adopt a neuroscience approach to address this issue. However, most studies have focused on aerobic forms of exercise. To our knowledge, the effect of exercise modes on executive function measured by task switching in children have not yet been explored. Therefore, this 3-years proposal intend to systematically examine the effects of exercise modes on executive function in children using cross-sectional studies, acute exercise interventions, and long-term exercise interventions. For the first year, a cross-sectional design will be adopted. Seventy-five children will be recruited and categorized into open-skill, aerobic, and irregular exercise groups according to their history of exercise participation. Both behavioral and neuroelectrical measurements from task switch performance will be compared among these groups. For the second year, we further examine the effect of acute exercise modes on task switching in children. Seventy-five children will be randomly assigned to open-skill, aerobic exercise or control groups and task switch performance will be compared. The third year adopts a longitudinal design by addressing the issue of the effect of different long-term exercise modes on task switching in children. From the scientific perspective, completion of this 3-year project will further our understanding of the neuroelectrical processes underpinning the beneficial effects of exercise modes on executive function in children. The results will also provide important practical implications for designing more effective exercise programs for improving executive functions for children.
