Therefore, this project will take this important period as the main time frame to discuss the development of pediatrics. In this project, I intend to take bianzheng (change and steam) as an example to discuss Chinese physician’s conception on phenomenon and process of new born baby’s growth. By exploring physician’s conception of children’s growth, we can go further to study how those physicians try to formulate the physical development of a new life. In this project, I will also take kewu (frightened by stranger) as an instance to delve into how physicians understand new born baby’s disease caused by external factors. By comparing the aetiology of adult’s kewu and that of children’s, I would like to clarify how medieval Chinese healers viewed the characteristics of children’s physical body and mental health. Moreover, by way of exploring physician’s diagnosis and treatment on bianzheng and kewu, I set out to examine how physicians put medical doctrine into practice, as well as whether physicians notice any clinical difference between sexes. I will also take socio-cultural context into consideration in order to delve into the development of pediatrics, and how doctors construct the features and theories of children’s physiology and psychology in medieval time.變蒸客忤小兒醫學中國pediatricsbianzhengchanging and steamingkewufrightened by strangerhistory of medicineChina蒸忤啼哭:中古時期小兒醫學之研究
