However, in the early 20th century the new woman emerged: they received secondary education and higher, and possessed a certain academic background and cultural capital. In the colonies, they served as educators and government employees; becoming writers and poets, keeping active in colonial Taiwan society. This research proposal aims to focus on these middle class Japanese women, to discover where and how they moved; the ways of their lives within the Japanese empire and colonial society; as well as at the crisscrossing relationship of the individual, family, and country hidden behind it all. Regarding the research methodology, the plan is to use both research at the micro and macro level to carry out these research goals. First, by tracing the threads in the works and letters left behind by the poet Ozaki Kouko, as well as the female teachers seen periodically in historical sources, this research aims to explore the trajectory of their lives and their colonial experiences. Thereby catching a glimpse of the different aspects of colonial society, along with considering the commonalities and dissimilarities between middle class Japanese women. At the same time, by making use of statistical records, newspapers, magazines and other historical sources, this research looks to sketch an outline of Japanese women in Taiwan, and to discover the mutual relationship between them, the Japanese Empire and colonial society. The expectation is, through this research, to reflect on the posture, thinking, and complex dynamics hidden in the backdrop of the Japanese empire; as well as how these dynamics intertwined between the nation and the individual, supported imperial expansion, and influenced the formation of colonial society.
