HPV 49 belongs to the epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV)-HPV group. It has only been detected in flat warts and one SCC in a renal transplant patient in the past literature. Our report showed the first case of SCC associated with HPV 49 in an immunocompetent patient. In addition, the high risk mucosal HPV 16 DNA was also detected in a palmar wart as well as the digital SCC of this patient. This finding indicates that HPV 16 might be a risk factor in the continuum of malignant progression from wart to cutaneous SCC.
