What causes productivity to increase? Why some countries are more efficient in their production than others are? How we may keep up the productivity and remain efficient in production in the long run? Answers to these questions are central to policy formations and to the advancement of people’s standard of living. The productivity and efficiency study in Taiwan started in the 1980s and has been gaining important momentum since the last decade. The scope of the related research covers economics, finance, education, transportation, public utilities, environment economics, medical services, natural resources, and many other fields to which productivity and efficiency are greatly emphasized in the operations. Results from this research community have attracted international attentions. Starting from the year 1997, Taiwan hosted a series of Asia-Pacific conferences in productivity and efficiency research in every two years. This series of conferences have become one of the most important productivity and efficiency conferences in the world and they regularly draw in leading scholars from all over the world to participate. Gradually, the local research community has establishes itself as one of the most active and productive research groups in this field. The purpose of this integrated research project is to systematically evaluate performance of firms and industries from an integrated scope which covering dimensions of efficiency, productivity and effectiveness. We also investigate key factors that affect performance of firms and industries. Our research subjects include firms in high-tech and generic manufacturing industries, as well as private and public services industries. In this current 3-year research project, our research will emphasize on productivity and performance of industries in Taiwan. Research results from Taiwanese firms and industries could provide useful management information to those relevant countries in the Asia and world. Some sub- projects also conduct international and cross countries comparisons, which will be the ultimate research direction in our future plan of this research. In this first 3-year research project, we will emphasize on the fallowing four area projects: (1) productivity and efficiency of private service industry, (2) productivity and efficiency of public service sector, (3)managerial method and firm performance, and (4) productivity and efficiency research method. The team of this research project consists of top scholars in Taiwan’s productivity and efficiency research community. A total of thirteen sub-projects are created which show an array of diversified research topics and issues and cover many different fields of social science research. Each sub-project invites well known scholars in the international community as advisors, providing opportunities for international collaboration. Regular seminars are held for project participants, which facilitates communications among sub-project researchers and encourages inter-discipline and inter-fields collaborations. This project will not only generate high quality publications but also level the local research community to a new and higher ground.生產力與效率經濟成長組織效能產業表現績效評估productivity and efficiencyeconomic growthorganizational effectivenessindustrial performanceperformance evaluation生產力與效率研究總計畫:從東亞邁向全球化
