Nevertheless, the importance of low effective atomic number (Zeff) phosphors in this particular application cannot be neglected. Several TL materials are reported with very high sensitivity and stability. However, there is a lack of scientific articles explaining the necessity of tissue-equivalent Zeff phosphors in radiation detection techniques. In this chapter, we have discussed about the role and importance of low Zeff phosphors in TL dosimetry applications. In the first section, an introduction to history of TL phenomenon along with its various application and necessary criteria required for dosimetry purposes are explained in detail. The second section includes the points explaining the requirements of low Zeff phosphors in TL dosimetry. In the third section, a brief explanation is given about some commercial low Zeff thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) with their suitable applications and drawbacks in TL dosimetry. The fourth section gives a brief introduction to practical application of these low Zeff phosphors in different areas. The fifth and last section includes the challenges of low Zeff phosphors. Overall the present chapter gives a detail description of the importance of low Zeff phosphors in TL dosimetry applications.Dosimetry | Phosphors | Thermoluminescence | Tissue equivalent | TLDsLow Zeff phosphors for radiation dosimetrybook part10.1016/B978-0-323-85471-9.00013-02-s2.0-85142571129https://api.elsevier.com/content/abstract/scopus_id/85142571129
