We will observe Chinese learning at the character and word levels in native Chinese and native English speakers. The neural substrates of language learning will be revealed by the specialization of brain regions and brain function lateralization. A longitudinal approach will be used to examine whether the specialization of brain regions and brain function lateralization can be predictive of future performance on language achievement tests. Moreover, we will control the differences between the learners’ native languages and Mandarin Chinese to gain deeper and better understanding of language learning. In Experiment 1, fMRI will be used to examine the neural correlates of learning Chinese characters. In Experiment 2, MEG will be used to examine the brain function lateralization for native English and native Chinese speakers to learn Chinese words. In Experiment 3, MEG will be used to further examine the influence of syntactic contexts on learning Chinese words. This proposal may have significant bearing on whether language learning may result in the restructuring of the brain so as to enhance one’s cognitive ability, or even to have implication on the long-discussed issue of brain plasticity.腦側化語言與認知華語學習大腦可塑性brain function lateralizationlanguage and cognitionlearning Chinesebrain plasticityBrain Change and Lateralization as a Benchmark in Learning Chinese Characters and Words
